SEBACEOUS CYST

What is a sebaceous cyst?

When hair follicles under the surface of the skin become inflamed, because the sebaceous gland’s drainage tube becomes blocked, sebaceous cysts may develop. Usually, these are subcutaneous thickenings that do not bother you but in certain circumstances, they can be bothersome or painful.

When will you benefit from sebaceous cyst treatment?

If your sebaceous cyst is in an inconvenient place, such as under the edge of your clothes, or if you find the location of your sebaceous cyst aesthetically annoying, it is perfectly possible to have it removed without much of it being visible afterwards.

Before the procedure, Dr Lemmens naturally ascertains whether your growth is indeed a sebaceous cyst and what is the best way to remove it.

Sebaceous cysts are usually opened and cleaned or drained. Depending on the size of the sebaceous cyst, the resulting small opening may be subsequently taped with star strips or sutured.

After the procedure, you should make sure the wound is kept clean and dry. Dr Lemmens will discuss the follow-up treatment with you. Usually, you will need to use an anti-inflammatory ointment in combination with medication to prevent the sebaceous cyst from coming back.

In a number of cases, it is possible that the sebaceous cyst simply returns after some time.
